To stay out of trouble, my friend and I decided to learn to play tennis. I purchased each of us a $5.00 wooden racket, and we went to the tennis court. Our tennis shoes cost about as much as our tennis rackets, shorts and a t-shirt was the tennis wear of the day, and we collected coke bottles to purchase our tennis balls. Getting time on the tennis courts back then took longer than today. Everyone was playing; waiting for a court (there was an abundance of outdoor courts and no indoor courts where I lived), could take up to a couple of hours; but we were persistent, and we waited. When we first started playing, we hit balls everywhere. The people playing next to us had to be the most patient people in the world. Chasing balls was what we really did for awhile, but soon we got where we could actually hit a rally. Then we got where we could play for points. Then, we started play other people, and eventually could pretty good. We joined a league which used the ladder challenge system ( y …

For the first several years we used the summer week to return to our home resort and exchanged the early autumn week. One of our first exchanges was to Hilton Head Island where we discovered Island Club with a staff of pros and lots of tennis courts where guests could play for free. As avid tennis players, we were thrilled. The resort fronted on a beautiful wide beach that was very remote at the time. We could walk for what seemed like miles in one direction without encountering a soul. At low tide we did not even have to get our feet wet. At higher tides we could scramble across the rocks to continue our journey. We loved the spot so much we decided to make our next purchase directly from the resort without attending a sales meeting. We now owned three weeks which friends at home told us was a big mistake. It wasn’t for us. We had two weeks to use each year and one to trade. And what fun we had trading! The Poconos in Pennsylvania provided scenic painting locations. From photos taken …

These shoes are almost too good,,instead of running for a ball I just want to stand there. I think I should have went with a smaller size but even still I like the fit and feel of them. I have no fear of rolling my ankles with these stable shoes. I do think the sizes run pretty true.

If you are looking for surf without the crowd that typifies nearby Waikiki Beach, Ala Moana Beach Park is your best option. Plus, you can also view Diamond Head from here. Located between Waikiki and Honolulu, Ala Moana Beach Park is the favorite of locals, and families tend to hang out here on weekends and in summer. It’s easy to understand why. Behind the beach, the park offers plenty of picnic shades, running trails, tennis courts, and other entertainment facilities. Ala Moana may be a quieter and calmer place to relax, but its surf condition fares no less than that of Waikiki Beach. Protected by an outer reef, the water in Ala Moana Beach is always calm. It is considered safe for children, and ideal for swimming, body boarding, boogie boarding, and surfing. However, water visibility is poor so children should always be watched and made sure they don’t stray from the shore. Also, waters in the beach channel can be deceptive. If you are a weak swimmer or a beginner, do not swim near …

The aspects of his game that shot him up to #1 include speed, defensive maneuvering, and power. But the most important aspect is one that is admired the world over- his ability to generate massive amounts of topspin, exceeding 3200 rpm! By following these simple rules, you will form the foundation for hitting topspin, and by sticking to them, you will become a topspin pro. Rule #1- Proper Grip You have to grip your racquet with the semi-western or western grip. This is imperative. Without the racquet, one could not play tennis, and without proper grip, one can’t swing the racquet correctly. If you can’t swing the racquet correctly, you can’t hit correctly. Grip should be the number one priority in your game. Make sure to switch to either the semi-western or western (the latter is used for hitting with the most spin) and keep it. At first, it will feel weird, but keep swinging with it and you’ll eventually get in the habit of using this grip. Rule #2- Proper Ball Positioning Have the b …

Both Russian players Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina who are in the fourth and fifth position respectively and whose career breakthrough year has been the present tour have shown incredible determination beating well-known opponents on all surfaces. Dementieva, who is in her mid twenties reached this year a career high raking at the number four position and holds a singles record of 469-232 and she is also a gold medallist holder. On the other hand, there is Dinara Safina who is only twenty-two years and already has eight single WTA titles and four ITF wins to her name. Safina’s best performances have been at this year’s French Open final where she played Ana Ivanovic and at the recent US Open semi final. The following 7 beginner mistakes are what I believe to be the biggest challenges for the novice. Address these issues and you’ll be improving in no time. 1. Not Judging The Ball It’s very common for a beginner to lack judgment in where the ball is going to go and how fast it’s going to get there and play appropriately. A beginner often thinks the ball is going to be shorter than it actually is. They rush to the ball and consequently hit the ball to hard and are off balance when they get there. They don’t realise that the ball will actually fly deeper. 2. Hitting The Ball Too Hard Another big challenge for a beginner is how not to hit the ball too hard. They see a ball and swing at it. A beginner is only thinking of connecting with the oncoming ball and they may panic a little. One of the main reasons for hitting too hard is that they don’t have a target. Your arm doesn’t know how much it should swing, if you know the distance then you can get a feel for what force is required. 3. Bei …
