After its initial rise in popularity with the French nobility, tennis spread throughout Europe, becoming particularly popular in England. As in France the game became recognised as the sport of kings. Henry VIII was a very keen player and built a court at his palace in Hampton Court, still used today by Real Tennis enthusiasts. In those days Tennis was generally played on a natural grass court using wooden racquets strung with cows gut. Whilst court surfaces and racquet string technology have changed throughout the years, the fundamentals of the game have remained unchanged. Developing your own game to the best of your ability requires attention to four main areas of the game. The first area is technique. Technique is simply the method by which one hits the ball, and is the most fundamental aspect of the game. If a player does not possess the skill to be able to hit the ball and have it reach the other side of the net, then there is no possibility to progress to the other areas of the …

Before this point, the history of tennis is the history of a completely different game real tennis. Real tennis is played on indoor courts. In fact, real tennis cannot be played outside the players use the angled walls of a real tennis court to strategically hit and return the ball to their opponents. Yes, real tennis his very similar to today s modern tennis, or lawn tennis, but only in the same way that handball, badminton, croquet, and racquetball are similar to lawn tennis! That is why I choose to start my history of tennis at the point in which lawn tennis diverged from real tennis, and this happened in the 1850 s. It was in the 1850 s that Charles Goodyear, of Goodyear tire fame, invented vulcanized rubber. Vulcanized rubber is a process that prevents natural rubber from deteriorating so quickly (without the vulcanization process, natural rubber could deteriorate within just a few days.) So, with the vulcanization of rubber came rubber tennis balls. The rubber tennis bal …

The word tennis, is believed to be derived from the French words such as tendere (to hold), tenez (to take), or tenir (hold this). The exact origins of the word are unknown. The term racquet (racket) is believed to be evolved from the Arabic word rahat, which means palm of the hand. Actually, the racket was invented in Italy in the year 1583. Various games of ball and racket such as court tennis (United States), real tennis (United Kingdom), and royal tennis (Australia) originated from a 12th-century French game called paume, which means palm. Paume was a game played on a court where the ball was struck with hand. Paume evolved into jeu de paume (game of the palm) in which rackets were used. In 1873, a game known as Sphairistik (a Greek term, which means playing ball) had been invented by Major Walter C. Wingfield, from which the modern outdoor tennis evolved. He first played the game in Wale at a garden party. In 1874, he formulated rules for lawn tennis. In addition, in the same yea …

Although gaining in popularity, the West Side members were forced out of their rented home after only ten years at Central Park. The venue now considered potentially too prosperous by its owners for it to be used solely for tennis. Despite this early set back, the club grew in stature and over the next twenty years West Side members were to relocate twice more, before finding their new home that was to accredit the now famous tournament with its name. 1912 saw the acquisition of the Forest Hills site in New York, however the club’s popularity required a 14,000 seat stadium rebuild to cope with public demand. Finally, West Side players had a permanent home. The potential of the new Forest Hills site drew attention from the United States Lawn Tennis association and major world players alike, it was here that the U.S open and Grand Slam events were to flourish and become recognizable around the globe. Tennis was at an all time high with the likes of Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Jimm …

Although the process explained here is simple, it does assume that you are physically prepared for your match through proper physical conditioning and your on-going tennis exercise routines. In short, the physical and mental parts of a complete tennis game are inseparable. The payback from learning and applying this technique can be substantial, particularly if you are prone to excessive pre-match “jitters”. Your nervousness will be eliminated which will give you that much more time to focus on the technical side of your tennis game and your physical conditioning. This proven system starts with visualizations. Try closing your eyes and imagine yourself in a stressful situation during a tennis match. Once you have that mental image and are starting to actually feel the tension inside, follow the steps below to get your anxiety under control. You may not see maximum results your first few times through the exercise, but if you are consistent with applying the technique, you should notic …
